An optimized interrupted thread is suggested, in which the thread cross-section area is varied to match the uneven load distribution caused by the applied load. Distinction was made between a compression case (bolt and nut) and a tension case (turnbuckle). The load distribution was first described by a one dimensional spring model and was verified by a two dimensional axisymmetric finite element model.
