In this thesis we report on the synthesis of Graft copolymers of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with different side chains. Homopolymer brushes of 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate (SPMA), 4-styrene sulfonic acid (SSA), methacrylamide (MA), 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), N-3-dimethylamino propylmethacrylamide (DMAPMA) and N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide (NHAA), were prepared using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from secondary fluorine atoms on PVDF backbone. The copolymers were casted into membranes by phase inversion method in an aqueous medium. The effects of polymerization time, degree of conversion, chain transfer agent (CTA) additive, crosslink process and different solvents were investigated. Products were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, infrared spectrum (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).. The conversion degree reduced with CTA additive. It was found that the graft copolymers membranes at different conditions preparation have better flux and rejection properties than pristine PVDF.
