Abstract

Silt density index is a measurement of the fouling potential of suspended solids in a water sample, important in Reverse Osmosis desalination. The current measurement technique of the SDI needs improvements to predict more accurately the membrane and prevent fouling phenomena. An attempt was made in this work is to develop of a new and innovative system for measuring the SDI, using pressure-time correlations in a typical Reverse Osmosis scale system. Parameters investigated in this project were related to high membrane fluxes, working at high pressure systems in order to achieve a fast fouling of RO membranes in order to learn the behavior of the RO membrane fouling mechanism. Better understanding was achieved, yet no improved technique was developed.
