The main mode of treatment for asthma is inhalation of medication into the respiratory system. The most common treatment is a hand-held inhaler. Many patients, who are unable to use the hand-held inhaler or for whom its effect is insufficient, are treated with inhalation devices. Based on the current developing trend, which prefers administration of the medication in spray form as opposed to other prevalent methods, a new spray inhaler with significant technological advances was designed for asthma patients. The purpose of this study was to design a spray inhaler that is customized for the asthma patient, adapted to the user, to the task, to the innovative technology and to the daily environment of the user - who leads a routine lifestyle in between as well as during asthma attacks. The project was executed in two stages: a preliminary inhaler stage and a designed inhaler stage. Both stages included examination of the suitability of the spray inhaler design to the user, in pulmonary clinics, with the medical personnel - i.e. specialist doctors and nurses- and with patients treated at these clinics. Each stage of the project included a user group of similar constitution: users of both sexes, of two age groups (children 4-12 years old, and adults 60-82 years old), and medical personnel. The designed inhaler that had been adapted to the user and the task, leverages the technological advantages of the spray inhaler in a way that enables the improvement of the asthma patient’s lifestyle.
